TiU's Entrepreneurial College has its beginnings in the 1970s when a concerned group of educational innovators worried about the relevancy of traditional schooling and the problems of poverty.
Too often, graduates have book knowledge, but lack real life work skills. They are skilled at writing papers and passing pen and paper tests, but don't know how to apply the abstractions of academia to the workplace. School drop-out rates remain very high, particularly for low-income students. And sadly, even after many years in school, graduates often find themselves in work unrelated to their dreams and calling.
In addition to the irrelevancy of much traditional schoolwork, many people are locked out of advanced training because of extensive time requirements and high costs. Yet businesses need new people with specialized knowledge to manage turbulent and global market conditions.
Those who lack training bump along the bottom of the socio-economic and health pyramid. The poor are much more likely to be arrested for a crime or domestic violence, to have drug or alcohol problems, medical problems and mental health issues than those who are well-off. And the gap between rich and poor has become larger, not smaller.
Self-confidence doesn't develop through counseling. It comes from achievement, from accomplishing goals that demonstrate one's skills and capabilities. People are paid for what they can prove they can do. In a world where the rich get richer because of specialized information, the greatest equalizer is knowledge. As Sir Francis Bacon said, "Knowledge is Power" best acquired through experience.
TiU founders wrestled with the questions, "How can we provide affordable, high quality and rapid training that will enrich people's lives? How can we help people make their vision into a reality so they can have a decent life?"
Learning from the New Zealand model of higher education, they proposed an educational system that eliminates unnecessary general education requirements. Unlike many theory based business schools, TiU's Entrepreneur College is practical and hands on. Taught in brief discrete modules, the courses use simulations, case studies, and actual experience to help trainers and performance coaches understand how to build a business through TiU's flexible system. "We learn by doing," is more than a motto, it's a life-style at TiU's Entrepreneurial Colege.
TiU gives people the freedom and power to grow a business in the area a participant feels most passionate about. They learn the practical application of knowledge and build a life-long mission that gives meaning, purpose and direction. The Entrepreneur College shows Trainers and Coaches how to train others to do what they have done, thereby establishing a self-perpetuating system that can expand throughout the world. Teams of people invest in each other's success, reducing inequities in knowledge, wealth and power.
TiU's motto is: Scientia est Potentia (Knowledge is Power). TiU's Entrpreneurial College takes this motto to heart in all of its classes.
